Fran Merida Leaves Arsenal for Atletico Madrid

Arsenal young midfielder Fran Merida’s speculated move to Atletico Madrid has been confirmed now. The 20-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Spanish club. It is believed that he has decided to leave the North London club looking for more first team football.

The promising midfielder joined Arsenal in 2007 from Barcelona. He also spent a season at Real Sociedad on loan before returning for the 2009-10 season. However, the midfielder’s appearance was mostly reduced to the Cup competitions.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has always been an admirer of the former Barcelona player and it was expected that the player would sign a new deal and stay for few more seasons at the Emirates.

Fran Merida could have gained more first team action at Arsenal should Cesc Fabregas leaves for Barcelona in the Summer. At Atletico, he now has to compete with the players like Raúl García, Reyes, Paulo Assuncao and Ignacio Camacho for a place in the starting line up.
